Gaming News: Nintendo Exec Says Mysterious NX Console will be Different from Wii and Wii U

Although news and rumors about the mysterious NX console from Nintendo have been around for some time now, the company still hasn't revealed its exact features and details yet.

But recently, the president of the company confirmed that the NX will be a huge departure from Nintendo's current-gen consoles, Destructoid has learned.

According to company president Tatsumi Kimishima, the rumored console will provide gamers with a totally new and different gameplay experience. He also noted that it will be different from the Wii and Wii U consoles.

"As far as the NX goes, I've said it's different and obviously a new experience," he told Time. "If you look back to the beginning of our conversation today, we talked about the transition from the Wii hardware to the Wii U hardware and how difficult it is to explain to the consumer base what is different and new hardware."

"That being said, I can assure you we're not building the next version of Wii or Wii U," he added. "It's something unique and different. It's something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base."

As for the actual name of the upcoming console, Kimishima admitted that he doesn't know what the name "NX" stands for or how Nintendo came up with it. He noted that the late and former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata might have known the real meaning of the console's name but never got the chance to share it with anyone.

With Kimishima's latest statements about the NX, gamers can add another piece of information to the growing list of details about the console. However, many of the revelations made before about the NX, this one is still a bit vague. Hopefully, more concrete information will be released by the company in the near future.

Aside from not being an updated version of the Wii and Wii U, various reports have already stated that the mysterious device will feature a mix between mobile and console gaming.

According to The Verge, despite the lack of detailed information about the NX, various major developers, such as Square Enix, have already signed on to create games for the console. The company had previously confirmed that it will release an NX version of "Dragon Quest."

Nintendo has not yet announced an official launch date for the NX but the company is targeting to enter full production of the console sometime in 2016.
