Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe played down speculations about the possible rematch between retired boxing superstars Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather retired undefeated after claiming the 49th victory of his career via unanimous decision win against Andre Berto in September last year, which came just five months after beating Pacquiao in their record-setting bout.
The former pound-for-pound king has been firm since then that he is not planning to come out of retirement and is not interested in facing Pacquiao again, insisting that he has nothing to prove after his unanimous decision victory.
But in a recent interview, Showtime Sports executive Stephen Espinoza told RingTV that Mayweather vs Pacquiao 2 could happen if fans pushes for it. Espinoza added that there could be growing interest for the bout after Pacquiao cruised to a convincing unanimous decision victory over Timothy Bradley on Saturday.
"I know from talking to Floyd -- if there's demand for a particular fight -- I think he will give it strong consideration," Espinoza said. "But I think this is one where we're not going to put the cart before the horse. If people are interested in that fight then I think they'll make their voices heard and we'll start working on it."
Most boxing analysts are convinced the second fight could surpass the 4.6 million pay-per-view buys of the first fight, which was the highest in boxing history. However, Ellerbe reiterated that Mayweather is not planning to fight again, as he is focused on his promotional company.
"Floyd is retired and nothing has changed," Ellerbe told Yahoo Sports. "There's nothing else to talk about. He's enjoying his life as a retired fighter and I'm focused on the company. We have four shows in five weeks and that's my focus. There has been no talk, nothing, not a word, about Floyd coming back."
It is also worth noting that Pacquiao, who has a 58-6-2 record with 38 knockout victories, also said after the win against Bradley that he will retire and focus on his political career and charity works in the Philippines.
