President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday that he will live in the White House after his inauguration in January, but his wife Melania will stay back in New York till their 10-year-old son Barron finishes his school year.
"The campaign has been difficult for Barron, and she is really hoping to keep disruption to a minimum," an anonymous source told the New York Post.
While at his Bedminster Golf Club, Trump was asked when Melania and Barron would shift to Washington to which he replied, "Very soon. Right after he finishes school."
Melania told People Magazine about three months ago that her main responsibility was being a mother to Barron.
"My husband is traveling all the time," she said. "Barron needs somebody as a parent, so I am with him all the time."
They will continue to live in New York till Barron, who is in fifth grade, completes his elementary school year in June next year.
"It's a little scary for Barron," Trump had said. "He thinks he is going to be taken away from friends. But I tell him if this happens, Daddy will help people, and can help children like him, and that makes him happy."
Melania plans to travel back and forth between New York City and Washington D.C. until June.
Melania is said to have stayed away from the limelight during Trump's campaign, but plans to take up the conventional role of the first lady which includes a campaign to deal with cyberbullying.
"The Trump family is energized and excited about their new role serving the country, and specifically the President-elect's task at hand of helping to move our country forward," transition spokesman Jason Miller said. "No official statement has been released by the Trump family regarding transition timing, but like any parents they are concerned about pulling their 10-year-old son out of school in the middle of the year. We would also appreciate the same privacy and security considerations given to previous First Families with regard to minor children be extended to the Trumps as well."
